Behind The Song
"Wrecked It"
edwards/nicholson/self
This was probably the second song Ryan, Rebecca and I wrote together on our usual Thursday night get together. Rebecca and I were talking...Ryan was sitting on the floor playing his guitar and we were throwing out ideas. I was talking about relationships and how people get comfortable, expect things from each other and take for granted what they have. Like usual Rebecca just spits out a couple of lines and at the end of line she said "You Wrecked It" and Ryan and I said thats PERFECT! Rebecca wasn't sure that was the right thing but she has a way of just spitting it out! Thats why I respect them both so much, their AMAZING!
"Lucky Girl"
lainey edwards/ryan nicholson
This is the VERY FIRST song Ryan and I wrote together. I had a list of titles and ideas and showed Ryan and I said let me know if anything strikes ya he said, "I like Lucky Girl." So we wrote this song..It's talking about a girl that meets that guy that makes her feel amazing and its better than any love she's had before! I can remember after writing this I met my family and my best friend Susan at Outback for dinner and we sat out in the parking lot and cranked up the stereo! The intro just made me think of walking out on the biggest stage, with a screaming crowd, and everybody singing every word with me! I look forward to that day! I feel like this song started it all gave me my sound! I AM A LUCKY GIRL AND SO BLESSED!
"Somethin' Bout Butterflies"
Edwards/Goss/Stephenson
I wrote this song with Tiffany Goss and Ray Stephenson...this song was not really meant to be written on this day, but I am sure glad it did :) Tiffany and I met up and she said you have to meet my friend Ray cause Ray is an AMAZING painter so we went over to visit and they were gonna write and they asked me to stay...so thats why I feel like it wasn't really supposed to be written that day :) it was just meant for me to stay. Ray was reading something and ran across this really beautiful story about how people describe love. A child said that its when peoples eyelashes go up and down and a bunch of little stars fall out of their eyes. I just thought that was so sweet and how the song developed was really cool. Something as simple as that fluttery butterfly feeling that everyone has felt sometime in their life made such a cool and unique song!
"Could've Been A Good Thing
Edwards/Nicholson
This was the second song we wrote. If you are a writer you know good and well that you really don't know when you go into the room what you are gonna write until its written. Ryan and I were talking about this song and he reminded me that we planned on trying to write a ballad. So like any other writing appointment we were throwing out rifts and ideas. You just can't force yourself to write something, it just has to be right! So after getting started we just did not feel like writing a ballad so Ryan switched gears and came up with this. We sat with it and I had the title, I had plenty of inspiration from a couple of different relationships and I'm sure many people can relate to it...when somebody doesn't treat you right and you know they'll regret letting you go or that they ruined their shot, you can just tell them "It Could've Been A Good Thing" :)
"Me & Georgia"
Batten/Blazy/Edwards
This was the first time Cory and I had written together, we started this song sitting outside of Edge Hill Studios in Nashville...we had come up with the melody and idea and had to call it quits for the day. How we started the title idea was I saw a book title called "Between Georgia" and I told Cory and he liked it and so as the music went on we developed the story between these two girlfriends and Cory asked me which girl would I be the one who causes trouble or goes along, and I said go along :) I'm the type of girl too afraid of getting in trouble :) Cory said well I would love to bring Kent in on this, which I think my mouth was hanging wide open cause Kent is amazing and I knew I would be a little intimidated, but of course I was not gonna say no :) So we ended up finsihing this song with Kent. Here it is and I could not be anymore proud just like I am with all my writers, but what an honor it was to have Kent, somebody with so much experience. Thank you guys for such a fun song!
"Burnin"
Edwards/Nicholson/Self
This was written at my house, we took a couple of weeks to write this song because the more it developed we knew we needed to get it just right to make it really cool. It started with a little bit of a bluesy soulful feel and came to life the more and more we worked with it. I remember we were sitting on the floor and I was singing a melody and something struck me and reminded me of Johnny Cash and we were trying to think what song it sounded like...and it hit me it sounded like "Jackson" so I said we can have a hint of Johnny Cash, but not rip off one of the greats :), so we tweaked it. This song was so much fun to write and some of the lyrics just make me laugh and I always love to perform it!
P.S. I cannot be held responsible for any items damaged or lost ;)
"Can It Be"
This is was the very last song that was written for the album. Just like many I knew as soon as we finished writing it that it was perfect for the album! At that point I knew I needed a ballad that was a love song and this is what came out! We've all been in love so it was pretty easy to put these feelings into a song! To me its a beautiful simple country song with simple everyday words but words that can mean so much, I hope love is something that everybody experiences in their life!
"While I'm Sleepin"
I'll never forget how this song started! Every night I pick up my guitar and play it before I go to bed and push record on my recorder...even though if you know me well enough that I am NOT a "real" guitar player, but if I didn't press record and then I played something cool, I'd be mad cause I might not be able to play it again twice :) Ryan and Rebecca and I got together for our usual Thursday night writing and I played them the rift that I came up with. I was flipping through my notebook, I said ok I have an idea, but it might be stupid, "Do your leavin' while I'm sleepin." So this is what we wrote. This song will always be close to my heart and has encouraged me to keep playing guitar :) So you don't have to be a great guitar player to write a song!
"I Found A Good Man"
I'll never forget this day! Sitting out on Kents patio overlooking the whole city of Nashville, to me its one of the most peaceful places in town! It was such a gorgeous summer day too! Kent and Cory had their guitars outside, I gave them an idea of what kind of song I would like to write, a "feel good" kind of song and Cory starting playing something and hummin' out a great melody...so I set my recorder up and let it go! Cory brought up how there aren't many female songs on country radio about how great men are! Their all about chasin' him down, pump him full of led and just how awful they are....so he said there are good men nobody ever sings about :) After we took a break for a great lunch fixed by Kent, we came back to the song and here it is! I think women are gonna love this song because they have a good man in their life or it inspires them to find that good man and men will love it cause they are getting praise and being noticed for being a great guy :)
"We Lost Him"
Edwards/Watt/Williams
"We Lost Him" is probably by far the most personal song I've every written, this song came after my Grandma Betty passed from her battle with cancer. My grandparents had been married almost 52 years, so they were each others lives! My Papas life was permanetly changed, we all saw the chang it made in him. I brought this title and idea to Karleen and Rachel. Rachel had also gone through this with her grandparents. To me it just shows how much of an impact someone can have in your life. This song is dedicated to an incredible women my Grandma Betty and others that have lost loved ones!
"Numb"
Numb was inspired by a friend of mine going through a lot of health issues and she described some of the things she was going through and how the medication affected her. She couldn't feel pain because of the pain killers, but yet she could tell when she didn't feel well cause her heart was beating out of her chest...it just struck me as such an odd description. We spent a long time making sure we wrote it just right with the right visual lyrics.
"Believe"
Believe was written sitting at Rebeccas dining room table, late one night. Ryan and I were really just playing around on the guitar while Rebecca put her baby down to sleep and not intending to write something right then and there, but Ryan started playing the music and I started humming out the melody and blurted out "Roll The Dice...."and Rebecca spit out a bunch of lyrics that just flowed! So we just rolled with the gamble, kind of take a chance idea and just believe that it will happen! I'll never forget sitting in that kitchen, it was really, really late and we were all just singing away after it was written like we were a big choir and dancing around in the kitchen. It has a lot of soul to it and is just a lot of fun. I think it turned out really cool, with a lot of inspiration that you can apply it to pretty much any aspect of your life!
